Former Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh Justice Manmohan Singh Liberhan, who also held various prestigious positions in the field of judiciary, left for his heavenly abode on Sunday. For 17 years he headed the Liberhan Ayodhya Commission of Inquiry, which prepared a report on the Babri Mosque demolition.
He passed away at his Chandigarh residence and his last rites will be held at cremation ground in the city, sector 25 as per the information provided by the family.
Born 11 November 1938, served as a retired Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, India. Liberhan was formerly the advocate general for the north-Indian state of Haryana. He was soon thereafter elevated as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
He was appointed the chairman of the Liberhan Ayodhya Commission of Inquiry by the then Prime Minister, PV Narasimha Rao. According to the Commission, the events of 6 December 1992 in Ayodhya that culminated in the razing of Babri Mosque were "neither spontaneous nor unplanned".
Justice Liberhan was subsequently transferred to the Madras High Court as Chief Justice of that court. Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court from where he retired.He continued to hold his position as the chairman of the Liberhan Commission till 2009.
The Liberhan Commission (officially Liberhan Ayodhya Commission of Inquiry) was a long-running inquiry commissioned by the Government of India to investigate the destruction of the disputed Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992.
Led by retired High Court Judge M. S. Liberhan, it was formed on 16 December 1992 by an order of the Indian Home Union Ministry after the demolition of the Babri Masjid on 6 December and the subsequent riots there.
The commission was originally mandated to submit its report within three months. Extensions were given 48 times, and after a delay of 17 years, the one-man commission submitted the report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 30 June 2009
