Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Shanta Kumar on Tuesday urged the Central government to help people affected by the recent natural disasters in the state, including a landslide in Chamba.
He appealed to all seven MPs from Himachal to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and request a special relief package for the rain-hit state.
“In my 90 years of life, I have never witnessed such a devastating calamity," Shanta Kumar said.
Since the monsoon began on June 20, 74 people have died and 34 are missing due to rain-related incidents in Himachal. The state has seen 36 flashfloods, 23 cloudbursts, and 24 landslides this season, leading to damages worth around ₹1,246 crore, as per government data.
Shanta Kumar also expressed concern over a recent comment by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who criticised the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for going beyond its powers.
He said actions like this damage the agency’s image and are not needed. " The BJP does not need to rely on the ED's interventions," he added.
