Former BJP MP Kirron Kher has been served a notice asking her to clear dues amounting to Rs 12.76 lakh for a government-allotted house in Chandigarh's Sector 7, officials said on Wednesday.n
The notice was issued by the Rents Office of the Chandigarh Assistant Controller (Finance and Controller) for the house (T-6/23), which was allotted to her during her time as a Member of Parliament. Kher was elected MP from Chandigarh in both 2014 and 2019.
According to officials, the notice asks her to pay the pending licence fee for the house without delay. If not paid promptly, a 12 per cent annual interest will also be applied to the outstanding amount.
Government residential accommodations come with a licence fee. From July 2023 to October 5, 2024, Rs 5,725 in licence fee was pending. After October 6, 2024, to January 5, 2025, her stay was considered “unauthorised,” leading to a 100 per cent penalty of Rs 3.64 lakh.
The penalty doubled from January 6 to April 12, 2025 — the official date by which the premises had to be vacated — adding Rs 8.20 lakh more.
The office of the Assistant Controller (Finance and Controller) Rents also added additional interest and miscellaneous charges, including Rs 26,106 and Rs 59,680 as 12 per cent annual interest till April 30.
The former MP has been asked to clear the full amount either through a demand draft or a bank transfer.
