As the outcry over the Kolkata rape and murder of a junior doctor intensifies, new allegations have surfaced against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College.
Ghosh, who recently resigned from his post, has come under scrutiny after neighbors accused him of domestic abuse and corruption.
Two days after the Calcutta High Court placed him on indefinite leave, Ghosh's former neighbors in Barasat, North 24 Parganas, have come forward with disturbing claims.
They allege that Ghosh, an orthopedic specialist, violently kicked his wife in the stomach just 14 days after she had undergone a Cesarean section to deliver their child. The neighbors say they were drawn to the scene by the sound of screams and found Ghosh’s wife in distress.
She was reportedly rushed to a hospital where doctors discovered that several of her stitches had reopened due to the assault.
Ghosh’s wife, a doctor at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College in Kolkata, allegedly suffered not only from her husband's abuse but also from mistreatment by his mother.
Neighbors claim that Ghosh's mother was "cruel" towards both the wife and the newborn child, refusing to provide even basic necessities like clothes for the baby.
The accusations against Ghosh don't end there. Neighbors also allege that he charged extra fees for treating patients at his home, despite holding a position at a government facility.
"Many locals used to visit him, but he used to take extra fees," one neighbor claimed.
Ghosh, who has since moved permanently to Kolkata, has a history of controversy during his tenure at RG Kar Medical College.
His time as principal was marked by multiple scandals, including the reversal of transfer orders. He was transferred twice from RG Kar but managed to get reinstated, allegedly by using his influence.
Former colleagues have also spoken out against Ghosh. Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent of RG Kar MCH, accused Ghosh of running a "mafia" within the institution.
Ali claimed that Ghosh engaged in numerous corrupt practices, from failing students to taking commissions on tender orders. He also alleged that Ghosh supplied alcohol to students at his guesthouse, further tarnishing his reputation.
