Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh is arrested in the RG Kar case over fresh allegations of evidence tampering, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.

Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested on Thursday in connection with the RG Kar case following fresh allegations of evidence tampering. The arrest comes after a new FIR was registered on the directive of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. According to police sources, the FIR includes serious charges such as criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence. It was filed after the victim’s father submitted a written complaint at the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate on Monday, prompting swift action by investigators.

The development follows the Chief Minister’s announcement of a fresh probe during a memorial meeting held last Sunday, marking the second death anniversary of the trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered in a seminar room of the state-run hospital. The meeting took place at Lokasanskriti Bhavan, where Adhikari was present along with the victim’s parents. He ordered the formation of a special investigation committee led by the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to re-examine the case.

Investigations have brought renewed focus on the actions of several individuals, including Ghosh, his aides Somnath Dey, and Sanjib Mukherjee, particularly concerning events at the cremation ground. Authorities are probing allegations that evidence was destroyed during the cremation process.

Adhikari had earlier raised questions about the circumstances under which the victim’s body was cremated at the Natagarh Kadamtala Crematorium. She alleged that while the cremation was initially scheduled for the third slot, it was abruptly shifted to the first slot, allegedly to hasten the process. Irregularities were also flagged, including the absence of the prescribed cremation fee and the lack of a mandatory signature from a close family member.

Based on these allegations, a case was registered against multiple individuals, leading to the latest arrest.

Notably, Ghosh’s son, Tirthankar, had been arrested on July 13 in connection with a separate post-poll violence case. The arrest of the ex-MLA comes exactly one month later, intensifying scrutiny around the case and its broader implications.
