Floral tributes were paid to former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Major General (Retd.) B. C. Khanduri by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in Dehradun on Wednesday. Leaders remembered him as a disciplined administrator and respected public figure.
Major General (Retd.) Khanduri, a former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, passed away at the age of 91. He was widely known for his long career in both the armed forces and public service.
Uttarakhand Governor Gurmit Singh also paid tributes to the senior BJP leader, honouring his contribution to governance and nation-building.
The mortal remains of Khanduri were taken with full state honours from his residence in Vasant Vihar, Dehradun, to the BJP state office on Balbir Road so that party workers and members of the public could pay their final respects.
Chief Minister Dhami, cabinet ministers, senior BJP leaders and supporters joined the funeral procession and offered tributes to the departed leader.
Earlier in the day, Vice President Radhakrishnan visited Khanduri’s residence, paid homage to him and expressed condolences to the grieving family members.
Following his demise, the Uttarakhand government had announced a three-day state mourning from May 19 to May 21. During this period, the National Flag will remain at half-mast across government offices, and official entertainment programmes have been cancelled.
The state government also declared closure of all government offices on the day of the last rites, which were conducted with full state honours.
Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over Khanduri’s passing, saying the veteran leader made significant contributions to the nation in both military and political life. In his message shared on X, the Prime Minister said Khanduri’s service to the country, from the armed forces to public office, would always be remembered. He also highlighted Khanduri’s role in Uttarakhand’s development and his efforts to strengthen national connectivity during his tenure as a Union Minister.
Chief Minister Dhami, in his condolence message, described Khanduri’s death as an “irreparable loss” not only for Uttarakhand but also for national politics. He said Khanduri remained committed to national interest and public service throughout his life, whether serving in the military or in public office.
