Four persons have been arrested in connection with the tragic death of a 13-year-old girl in a bomb blast in Kaliganj, Nadia district. The incident, which occurred amid Trinamool Congress’ celebrations following the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll results, has sparked a heated political row. The Krishnanagar Police confirmed the arrest of the four prime accused— Adar Sheikh, Manowar Sheikh, Kalu Sheikh and Anwar Sheikh.

Multiple charges have been filed against them and they are scheduled to be produced in court on Tuesday afternoon. Police also assured that the investigation is ongoing and all legal steps will be taken to ensure justice.

The victim, Tamanna Khatun, a fourth-grade student from Molanda village under Baro Chandghar panchayat, was reportedly struck by a socket bomb during a celebratory procession taken out by TMC supporters. The procession followed the landslide victory of TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed in the by-election, the results of which became clear even before counting concluded.

Allegations have emerged that bombs were hurled from the victory rally targeting the homes of CPI(M) supporters. Tamanna, an innocent bystander, succumbed to injuries on the spot. Her mother, Sabina Yasmin, alleged, “I saw who threw the bomb. We are CPI(M) supporters. Even if we don’t know their names, we know their faces— they are all Trinamool supporters.”

The incident has ignited strong political backlash. Opposition parties have directly blamed the ruling TMC for the violence. The BJP, taking a sharp dig, remarked, “Trinamool cannot win elections without bloodshed!”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, taking to social media on Monday afternoon, expressed deep concern and assured that stringent action would be taken against those responsible. Meanwhile, TMC’s victorious candidate, Alifa, condemned the incident and also demanded strict punishment.

Krishnanagar Superintendent of Police Amarnath K admitted that local tensions between two political factions have been brewing since 2023. He added that more details of the nature of the victim’s wounds will surface once the autopsy and forensic reports are received.
