Kandi police station has arrested four people within 24 hours for allegedly attacking a nurse at the Kandi Sub-Divisional Hospital in Murshidabad district. The accused include two men and two women. The tension erupted on Saturday evening after a patient named Mazem Sheikh, a resident of Baliahat in Khargram, was admitted with chest pain. His family alleged that despite being admitted, he did not receive treatment for a long time.
“The alleged delay led to heated arguments between the patient’s relatives and hospital staff, which quickly escalated into violence,” said a police officer.
According to hospital sources, the patient’s family stormed into the nurses’ quarters, vandalised property, destroyed important medical documents and physically assaulted a nurse on duty.
Acting hospital superintendent Avhik Das condemned the incident, saying, “Health workers are serving people day and night. Such attacks on them are unacceptable and condemnable.”
Following a written complaint from the hospital authorities, Kandi police launched an investigation and arrested four individuals after an overnight search operation. The accused are expected to be produced before court on Monday.
The attack has once again raised questions about the security of frontline health workers in government hospitals. Medical associations have urged the administration to ensure stricter protection measures for healthcare staff to prevent such violent outbursts in the future.
Meanwhile, a similar scene unfolded in Islampur Sub-Divisional Hospital in Uttar Dinajpur on Friday night after the death of a 55-year-old patient, Pranab Dutta, whose family alleged medical negligence.
Following the incident, Trinamool District President and Chairman of the Patient Welfare Association, Kanayalal Agarwal, arrived at the hospital with his supporters. Eyewitnesses claimed that the group entered the nurses’ quarters and threatened the staff, adding to the chaos.
