Five people lost their lives and two others were hurt when their vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Shimla on Monday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Joginder Singh, a resident of Khaula village, and Rajesh, Ekender Shahi and Laxmi, all natives of Nepal. The injured were Nev Bahadur, Dil Bahadur and Sajjan, who is Laxmi’s husband.
Police said initial investigation suggests the driver lost control of the vehicle, which plunged into the gorge. Three people died on the spot, while the fourth succumbed to injuries later.
Another passenger, Dil Bahadur, who was critically injured and shifted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Shimla, died during treatment. The other two are being treated at the Community Health Centre in Kotkhai, officials said.
A case of causing death by negligence under Section 106 of BNS has been registered, and further investigation is in progress, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Theog Siddhart Sharma told PTI.
The bodies have been sent for postmortem and families of the victims have been informed, police said.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the accident. He said the state government stands with the bereaved families and assured them of all possible help.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur, who is also the local MLA from Kotkhai, has condoled the loss of lives in the tragic road accident. Thakur expressed his sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
