At least four members of a family, including three children, drowned after a boat carrying ten people capsized in the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Gandham Sandhya (9), Gandham Saini (10), Bathula Karthik (12), and Konata Chaitanya (28). Their bodies were recovered from the river by search teams and shifted to a hospital for postmortem examination.
According to police, the incident occurred when members of the same family were on a joy ride in the river after attending a family gathering in Konur village. The boat reportedly overturned mid-journey after losing balance.
“Locals immediately rushed to the spot and managed to rescue six persons. However, four individuals drowned, and their bodies were later retrieved from the river,” police officials said.
A joint search operation involving police personnel, local residents, and fisherfolk was launched soon after the accident to trace the missing persons.
Authorities have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the boat capsize.
Meanwhile, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, chief of the YSR Congress Party and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, expressed shock over the incident. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and urged the government to provide immediate financial assistance to the victims’ kin.
