Four persons, including two women, lost their lives after a car plunged into a deep gorge in the Jharipani area on Mussoorie Road on Wednesday morning, police said.
As per police, the accident took place around 9.15 am on the Jharipani-Kolukhet road. The victims were travelling in a Maruti Celerio and were returning from Uttarkashi when the mishap occurred.
Initial probe suggest that the car had stopped briefly near a roadside shop. After one of the passengers bought a few items and the vehicle started moving again, the driver reportedly lost control. The car then rolled down the steep slope into the gorge.
Soon after the incident was reported, teams from the local police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire Service and the 108 Ambulance service rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
Police said all four occupants died on the spot. The deceased were identified as Satyaprakash from Sonipat in Haryana, Manit and Savita from Ghaziabad, and Sangeeta from Delhi.
Rescue personnel have recovered one of the bodies and shifted it to a nearby hospital. Efforts are still underway to retrieve the remaining bodies from the gorge. The victims' families have been informed about the tragedy. Police said further legal formalities will be completed after the recovery operation is over.
