At least four people were killed and two others went missing when their vehicle met with an accident on Sunday morning in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

According to police, the vehicle was on its way from Paddar to Massu when it plunged into a gorge.

“Four passengers have been killed in the accident, and two are missing,” they said, adding that a manhunt had been launched.

The deceased were identified as Raj Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Haqiqat Singh, and Satish Kumar, all residents of Garh, Paddar, and Kishtwar.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh expressed his condolences on his X handle, stating, “Saddened to learn just now that four of the passengers travelling in the vehicle have been found dead on the spot. Two other persons, including the driver, have not been traced yet. My sincere condolences to the bereaved families.”

This is the second tragic road accident in Jammu and Kashmir within 24 hours.

Earlier on Saturday, four soldiers lost their lives, and one was seriously injured when an Army vehicle fell into a 200-foot-deep gorge in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district due to bad weather and poor visibility.

Valley-based Chinar Corps posted on X, saying, “While performing duty in Bandipora district, an Indian Army vehicle skidded and fell into the gorge due to inclement weather and poor visibility. Injured soldiers were promptly evacuated for medical care with assistance from Kashmiri locals, for which we express gratitude towards the citizens for providing immediate succour. Tragically, three brave hearts lost their lives in the unfortunate accident. The Indian Army extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.”

A Quick Response Team (QRT) of the Army, police, and locals conducted rescue operations immediately after the accident. Three injured soldiers were taken to Bandipora Hospital, and another to Sonawari Hospital, officials added.
