Four people were killed and two others critically injured after a WagonR car rammed into a truck on National Highway-9 in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district early Wednesday morning, police said.
The accident took place near the Nayara petrol pump at Khyalipur Dhal in the Gajraula police station area around 4 am. According to police, the impact of the collision was severe, leaving the car completely mangled and causing major disruption to traffic on the highway for some time.
Circle Officer Anjali Kataria said the deceased have been identified as the car driver Mohammad Salman, a resident of Rampur, and three passengers — Naseem, Haris, and Mashooq — all residents of Malda district in West Bengal. Two others, Sunnat and Hasnain, also from Malda, sustained critical injuries and were referred to a higher medical centre for advanced treatment.
Police said all six individuals were students of a madrasa in Varanasi and had recently travelled to Bareilly. They were reportedly heading towards Delhi in different vehicles and were scheduled to board a train to Varanasi from the national capital when the accident occurred.
According to preliminary findings, two passengers died on the spot, while two others succumbed to injuries while being shifted to hospital. The injured remain in critical condition.
Officials said the WagonR was suspected to be travelling at high speed and the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash into a truck moving ahead. However, police added that all aspects of the case are being investigated and technical evidence is being examined before final conclusions are drawn.
The truck driver fled the scene after the collision and is currently absconding, police said. A search operation has been launched to trace him. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and further investigation is underway.
