Amarnath Yatra, which remained suspended for six consecutive days due to rain-related disruptions, continued smoothly on Sunday with a fresh batch of 4,474 pilgrims leaving the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu. The convoy is escorted by the CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police under extensive security cover to ensure the safe movement of pilgrims to the Baltal base camp.
As per officials, the convoy left at 2.42 am and consisted of 166 vehicles, including 93 buses, 26 mini-buses, and 47 light motor vehicles (LMVs). The fresh batch consisted of 3,531 men, 785 women, 96 sadhus, 51 sadhvis, 10 children, and one transgender pilgrim.
Officials said that no fresh convoy was allowed to take the Pahalgam axis to perform darshan since conditions at the base camp remain slippery, especially along the yatra track.
The Yatra was suspended on both tracks following incessant rainfall that triggered landslides, mudslides and shooting stones at several vulnerable locations along NH-44, forcing the closure of the highway for three days.
The road was reopened for traffic on Friday, paving the way for the resumption of the pilgrimage on Saturday.
With this fresh departure, the total number of Yatris who have left Jammu for the Amarnath shrine has now reached 123,503.
