Security beefed up in the region.

A heavy exchange of gunfire was reported in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Thursday, afternoon triggering fresh concerns over security in the region. The clashes reportedly involved Naga village volunteers and suspected Kuki armed groups.

According to police sources, the gunfight broke out at multiple locations across the district, including Mongket Chepu village, with the situation remaining active in at least three areas.

The confrontation is said to have begun around 4 PM when armed individuals, suspected to be Kuki militants, allegedly attempted to enter Sirarakhong village. In response, Tangkhul Naga village volunteers engaged them, leading to an exchange of fire that lasted for approximately 10 minutes.

In a separate incident, gunshots were also reported from the Lungter hill range near Sinakeithei village around 5 pm, further escalating tensions.

Police officials indicated that the incidents may have been part of a coordinated attack. Meanwhile, local village authorities alleged that militants opened fire from bunker positions directed towards their settlement, claiming these structures had been dismantled by security forces only days earlier.

Village leaders have urged authorities to take immediate measures to restore order and ensure the safety of civilians. The latest violence has once again raised serious concerns over stability and law and order in the region.
