Cold wave conditions across Jammu and Kashmir have improved after fresh snowfall in the higher reaches and rainfall in the plains lashed widespread areas, officials said on Monday.

Recent rainfall across the valley has provided respite from the month-long cold spell, with the Meteorological Department forecasting another spell of rain and snow in the next few hours.

According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “The summer capital recorded 4.0 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, which is 6.4 degrees above the seasonal normal.”
In contrast, the maximum temperature on Sunday also witnessed a jump of several degrees, settling at 6.0 degrees Celsius, which was a few degrees below normal.

The minimum temperature improved across several weather stations, except Gulmarg, which recorded freezing temperatures and intense cold on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the 40-day harsh winter period (Chillai Kalan) which commenced on Sunday with rain and snowfall, has brought respite from the cold wave and dry weather conditions.

The prolonged dry spell, with dense fog, had worsened hardships for people in Kashmir, with elders and young children reporting a surge in respiratory diseases.

The precipitation has improved air quality, and a visible improvement in dense fog conditions has also been noted. Flight operations at Srinagar International Airport have continued smoothly despite the adverse weather.

Chillai Kalan that runs from December 21 to January 31 is the coldest phase of winter and is vital for replenishing water bodies through snowfall on mountaintops and in forest areas. This precipitation supports summer water supply, horticulture, and agriculture in the region.
