Fresh snowfall in higher reaches in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday forced the closure of several strategic roads, officials said.

The historical Mughal road connecting south Kashmir’s Shopian district with Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu division was closed down for vehicular movement as a precautionary measure following the snowfall on Peer Ki Gali on Sunday, traffic police officials said.

Meanwhile, several important roads, including Gurez-Bandipora, were also shut for vehicular traffic due to the accumulation of snowfall on the Razdan Top and other connected roads of the north Kashmir district.

Similarly, the traffic on Sonamarg-Kargil road has also been suspended due to slippery conditions, they said.

Further, the overnight snowfall covered the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir Baramulla district in a white blanket, bringing much delight to the tourists staying here.

The Met Centre in Srinagar forecasted the weather to generally remain cloudy with the possibility of light rain or light snow over higher reaches and at isolated places till the afternoon today.

The weather is supposed to remain dry till the end of November.

As a result of the recent snowfall, the tourism department is expecting an increase in the footfall of visiting tourists to Kashmir Valley, especially the famous hill stations and ski resorts.

Meanwhile, Another Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit on December 1 and may cause light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and at the scattered to fairly widespread places during the late night of November 30 to forenoon of December 1, the MeT office said.
