Fresh snowfall likely in Kashmir from Feb 1

Recent spells of snowfall on January 23 and January 27 had already broken the month-long dry spell, providing much-needed relief to the farming community. However, heavy accumulation in rural and remote areas disrupted normal life. Dry weather with cloudy conditions is expected to prevail until January 31.

Jammu and Kashmir is likely to receive fresh snowfall from February 1 to February 2 as a western disturbance approaches the region, bringing light rain and snow in the plains and moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches, officials said on Friday.

Recent spells of snowfall on January 23 and January 27 had already broken the month-long dry spell, providing much-needed relief to the farming community. Authorities have issued safety advisories urging travellers commuting to and from Srinagar to avoid unnecessary journeys and to check road and highway conditions with traffic authorities before setting out.

A high-danger avalanche advisory remains in force in at least six districts of Jammu and Kashmir following an avalanche in Sonamarg on Monday night. The Jammu and Kashmir Police and the health department have been providing relief to stranded residents in snowbound areas.

Health department ambulance services conducted extensive rescue and relief operations, particularly in rural regions, successfully evacuating several elderly people, lactating mothers, and expectant mothers to nearby health facilities.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s government has received praise from party colleagues — including senior leader Ali Mohammad Sagar — and from residents for its effective response in delivering relief to people stranded in north, south, and central Kashmir.

The chief minister personally monitored rescue operations and the restoration of power supply, water, and other essential services across the Union Territory.
