Himachali Gaddi dog recognised as indigenous breed by ICAR-NBAGR.

Vice Chancellor of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur, Dr Naveen Kumar on Thursday announced that the Himachali Gaddi dog has been officially recognised as an indigenous dog breed by the National Bureau of Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBAGR) Karnal, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

This recognition comes after the diligent efforts of University scientists and officials from the Animal Husbandry Department, who provided scientific evidence to support the breed’s unique status.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted that the Gaddi dog is now the fourth indigenous dog breed to be officially registered in India and the first such breed from the Himalayan region. He further explained that the breed is named after the Gaddi tribe, traditionally known for their work in herding sheep and goats. These dogs serve as a crucial link between animals and humans, assisting in herding, protecting livestock, and establishing a unique bond with shepherds.

Dr Naveen Kumar also congratulated the team of scientists and the Dean of the Veterinary College Dr Ravindera Kumar for their hard work and dedication in achieving this significant milestone. He acknowledged their valuable contribution to the recognition of the Gaddi dog breed.

The Vice Chancellor shared that the University has set up an outdoor conservation unit for Gaddi dogs at the Dr G.C. Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. This unit provides Gaddi puppies to local shepherds and pet lovers, with financial support from the Animal Husbandry Department and Himachal Pradesh Council of Science, Technology, and Environment.
