The strategic Zojila Tunnel is set to achieve a major breakthrough on Tuesday, with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari scheduled to witness the event. Once completed, the tunnel will be Asia’s longest single-tube bi-directional tunnel built at a record height.
The breakthrough brings decades-old aspirations of all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh closer to reality, officials said.
Considered one of the most critical infrastructure projects from a security perspective, the tunnel will significantly ease movement for the Indian Army, reducing travel time from three days to just three hours.
According to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the breakthrough has been achieved six months ahead of schedule.
Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL), the executing agency, used the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) to cut through the challenging Himalayan geology.
The entire project spans 31 km, including approach roads and bridges, stretching from Sonamarg to Minimarg.
Minister Nitin Gadkari will witness the breakthrough along with senior officials of the Jammu and Kashmir administration today.
Once operational, the tunnel is expected to give a major boost to tourism and overall economic development in the region.
