Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced a ₹4,382 crore redevelopment plan for Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), with the ambitious goal of transforming the state's premier government hospital into one of India's leading medical campuses.
Making the announcement through a post on X, Sarma described the project as a major milestone for Assam's healthcare sector and one of the biggest investments in public health infrastructure undertaken by the state government.
"Wait till you see the new GMCH," the Chief Minister wrote, signalling a comprehensive transformation of the institution that has long served as the principal referral hospital for Assam and much of the Northeast.
According to the Chief Minister, the redevelopment project will create a modern healthcare campus equipped with advanced medical infrastructure and expanded treatment facilities to meet the region's growing healthcare needs. The plan aims to significantly improve patient care while strengthening the hospital's capacity to handle the increasing number of referrals from across the Northeast.

Officials said the revamp will include the modernisation of hospital buildings, expansion of healthcare services, creation of additional treatment facilities and development of a more efficient, patient-centric environment. The upgraded campus is also expected to incorporate state-of-the-art medical technology and improved support infrastructure for doctors, healthcare workers and patients.
GMCH is among the busiest government medical institutions in the Northeast, catering to thousands of patients every day from Assam as well as neighbouring states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram. The hospital has often witnessed heavy patient loads, making expansion of its infrastructure a long-standing demand.
The proposed redevelopment is expected to substantially enhance the institution's capacity, reduce pressure on existing facilities and improve the quality of specialised medical services available in the region. The project is also expected to strengthen medical education and clinical training by providing upgraded academic and healthcare infrastructure.
While announcing the redevelopment, the Chief Minister did not specify a timeline for completion or provide a detailed project blueprint. Officials said further details regarding the scope of work, phased implementation and execution strategy are expected to be announced in the coming days.
The mega project forms part of the Assam government's broader push to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to advanced medical services across the state.
