A 14-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a young man she had come in contact with through social media in the Purhiran area of Hoshiarpur, police said on Friday.
The accused is currently evading arrest, and police teams are making efforts to trace and apprehend him, officials said.
As per the police, the victim, a Class 9 student, had connected with the accused, Deepak Kumar, on Instagram some time back. The two remained in touch through online conversations, and the accused later started visiting the area where the girl lived.
Police said on May 20, the accused allegedly reached the girl's house when her parents were not at home. He allegedly persuaded her to accompany him and took her on his motorcycle to a secluded room located within the jurisdiction of the Industrial Area Focal Point police station, where he allegedly raped her.
On the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's mother, police on Thursday registered a case against Deepak Kumar under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
