In response to a recent altercation between medical staff and a male attendant who caused a disturbance within the hospital premises, authorities in Jammu have decided to deploy armed security personnel to prevent similar incidents in the future, officials said on Friday.
The Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and Sri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital will now be guarded by armed personnel from the paramilitary forces to address security concerns within the hospitals.
According to a senior official at the hospital, "GMC Jammu is among the first in the country to have armed security in the emergency premises for the safety of medical staff."
The decision to provide armed security for the medical staff working in these hospitals was finalised after thorough discussions with the local administration and senior police officials.
The recent events that have caused national concern were taken into consideration when making this decision.
A total of 34 police personnel, including 15 women officers, equipped with arms and communication tools, will be stationed to provide round-the-clock security, officials said.
These guards will be deployed in the emergency wing, mortuary, indoor wards, corridors, staircases, and at outpatient departments (OPDs).
Despite stringent laws, doctors are already under significant pressure to work relentlessly and often face violence from patients' attendants.
