Goa Law Minister Aleixo Sequeira revealed in the legislative assembly that the state is facing a shortage of 18 judges across 10 courts, including district courts.
The minister provided a written reply on Friday, detailing the vacancies in each court. The reported shortages are in Margao, South Goa, with four judges missing in the civil and criminal courts, and three judges missing in the district and sessions court.
Other courts facing shortages include the district and sessions court in Panaji, North Goa (two judges), civil and criminal courts in Panaji (two judges), and Mapusa (two judges). Additionally, there is a shortage of one judge each in the civil and criminal courts in Ponda, Bicholim, Gram Nyayalaya in Sattari, Valpoi, Vasco, and Gram Nyayalaya in Sanguem.
The minister explained that the strength of additional judges is calculated based on the 'Unit System' recommended by the National Court Management System (NCMS) Committee, as per Supreme Court directions. Sequeira clarified that the process of filling judicial officer posts in Goa is handled by the Bombay High Court, as per Article 229 of the Constitution. He assured that efforts are underway to fill the vacancies.
