In a development in the ongoing extortion case involving former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Sabyasachi Dutta, police have recovered a massive quantity of gold from a residence in Nadia district following late-night raids. Acting on information that Dutta provided during interrogation, a joint team from Bidhannagar North and Karimpur police stations conducted a raid at the ancestral home of Tina Bhowmik Saha— a TMC member of the Nadia Zilla Parishad and a close associate of the arrested leader. The operation took place in the Kishorpur area of Karimpur late Monday night.
According to police sources, the raid began around 11:45 pm, with a team comprising seven officers and twenty-one constables cordoning off the premises. At approximately 12:30 am, Dutta himself was brought to the location in a red Scorpio vehicle. The overnight search led to the recovery of nearly three kilograms of gold jewellery, estimated to be worth Rs 4.39 crore at current market prices.
Dutta, a former Mayor of Bidhannagar, was arrested earlier this month in connection with an extortion case. While he has denied all allegations, investigators claim to have uncovered substantial evidence against him, including irregularities in multiple financial transactions.
So far, five of Dutta’s bank accounts have been frozen. Authorities have also seized assets worth Rs 3.70 crore, including fixed deposits and cash holdings. In addition, a luxury Scorpio vehicle used by the former leader during his tenure as Chairman of the Bidhannagar Municipality has been taken into custody.
Police sources further revealed that investigations have identified at least five other major assets linked to Dutta. Earlier on June 15, a special team escorted him to two apartments located on the 7th and 13th floors of a high-rise in Rajarhat. A seven-hour-long search operation at these properties reportedly yielded key documents and several receipts related to gold purchases.
Officials indicate that the investigation is ongoing, with continuous interrogation and searches revealing details about Dutta’s financial dealings and alleged lavish lifestyle. Police are preparing to produce him in court again and are expected to seek an extension of custody for further questioning.
