For the third time in three days, the management at the Golden Temple received a bomb threat via e-mail on Wednesday. The fresh threat, similar to the earlier ones referring to RDX, has sparked concerns among the authorities and devotees alike.

In response, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has intensified security on the Golden Temple premises. Bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident. The Amritsar police and the SGPC are both on high alert. Police personnel and paramilitary forces deployed in large numbers around the Golden Temple complex are keeping a strict watch on every person entering or leaving the premises.

Demanding swift action against the perpetrators, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said, “The management has received three threatening e-mails in the last three days, and this has already been conveyed to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla has also been apprised of the development, but no appropriate action has been taken so far. We suspect that these threatening messages are a conspiracy to reduce the rush of devotees at the Golden Temple.”

The exact content of the message has not been disclosed so far owing to security concerns.

Earlier, SGPC secretary Pratap Singh said “some mischievous elements” are behind the threats, which are aimed at disturbing peace and spreading fear among devotees. “Those who send such threats do not belong to any religion. They speak of targeting all religious places, not just the Golden Temple. Their goal is to create panic,” he said.

Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said a breakthrough is expected soon. “We are close to solving the case,” he said.
