A good monsoon this year has enabled the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to save crores of rupees as it had to supply less electricity this paddy season for irrigating the crops.
The abundant rainfall has also raised farmers’ hopes of a bumper paddy crop. Farm experts said Punjab is on course for a record paddy harvest this kharif season with an expected paddy yield of 185 lakh tonnes this year as against last season’s yield of 182 lakh tonnes.
They said early pre-monsoon and timely arrival of monsoon in most parts of the state helped save a lot of stress on groundwater, besides helping the PSPCL save on the cost of free power to farmers. “It is after years that there has been a decline in power supply as the demand usually rises every year when over 13 lakh tubewells pump out lakhs of litres of water,” they added.
