The derailment of the freight train temporarily halted the railway services on Friday morning, January 23, 2026, due to the accident involving the freight train at the Rupsa station within the district of Balasore. The accident involving three wagons of the goods train happened at around 10 AM as it was leaving to go to the destination of Kharagpur after it dropped its consignment of cement and fertilizer.
The three wagons reportedly jumped the tracks on the fourth line of the station, which falls under the Bhadrak-Kharagpur section of the South Eastern Railway (SER). Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported.
After the accident, a team of senior officials from the railway department and other technical experts from the Kharagpur division rushed to the spot to supervise the restoration process. Machineries were used in the repositioning of the wagons as well as in the restoration of the damaged rail part resulting from the accident.
Even though normal operations resumed on these major lines after a short period, on the specific rail path where the accident happened, operations were suspended for a few hours to carry out a safety investigation. The South Eastern Railway Company then opened a formal investigation into the exact cause of the accident.
