Facing criticism for not being able to arrest its own MLA, the Punjab government has deputed the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) to arrest AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, who had evaded arrest in Karnal on Tuesday in connection with a rape case registered against him on a complaint by a Zirakpur-based woman.
The police claimed that when they had gone to Dabri village of Karnal to arrest Pathanmajra, his supporters fired gunshots and pelted them with stones, allowing the Sanuar MLA to escape.
The AGTF team comprises specially trained policemen who have arrested and neutralised many “A” category gangsters in and outside Punjab. DSP Bikramjit Brar, who is heading the team and currently camping in Haryana, was conferred the President’s gallantry medal last year for eliminating two gangsters reportedly involved in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Brar was also part of the operation in which gangster Vicky Gounder was killed.
The AGTF team is trying to go through Pathanmajra’s mobile locations. It is also examining CCTV camera footage along the route taken by the MLA when he escaped.
