The Himachal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress government headed by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of going after small offenders while sparing big drug traffickers in its campaign against drug abuse, particularly chitta (adulterated heroin).
The BJP questioned why big drug dealers are not being arrested and alleged that only small-time offenders are being picked up to gain media attention.
In a statement issued, BJP state spokesperson Sandeepani Bhardwaj stated that the Congress is not waging a genuine fight against drugs but is instead focusing on image-building through symbolic events and theatrics.
He further alleged that some Congress leaders themselves are acting as patrons of the drug trade and said that without strict action against them, the anti-drug campaign will remain limited to hollow slogans.
Strongly criticising the Congress government over a post shared on the official Facebook page of the Himachal Pradesh Department of Information and Public Relations, Bhardwaj said it was inappropriate, unacceptable and against established government norms for a constitutional department to use social media to politically attack the BJP.
The controversial post was linked to the Chitta Awareness Walkathon held in Hamirpur and targeted the BJP by claiming that the previous BJP government lacked the intent to act against drug abuse.
