The Congress on Friday said the distress, anger, and frustration may have awakened the government’s conscience, not just for mere talks but for fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh at the earliest.
The assertion comes days after violent protests claimed the lives of four people and injured more than 90, while 40 police personnel also sustained injuries in the action.
The Congress Party General Secretary in charge of communication, Jairam Ramesh, said six years ago, the people of Ladakh had many expectations when the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh was created by dismantling the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
His post on X said, “The people of Ladakh have seen their land and employment rights under severe threat. They have also seen the local administration and elected bodies taken over by the LG and the bureaucracy. Though they have only seen negotiations after negotiations without meaningful results, their demands are legitimate under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and for an elected legislature,” he said.
He questioned the “great uncertainty” caused by China’s unilateral abrogation of the status quo on the Line of Actual Control and the “PM’s June 19, 2020, clean chit to China.”
“Ladakh is of immense importance, as it serves a “cultural, economic, ecological, and strategic purpose to India,” he said. “The people of Ladakh have, at all times, been proud Indians to their very core,” he added.
Meanwhile, an uneasy calm prevailed in Ladakh on Thursday as the police and paramilitary troops strictly enforced curfew in Leh town, days after the violent protest. More than 50 people have been detained by the authorities in connection with inciting violence that saw people burning down the BJP office, torching several vehicles, and pelting stones.
