National BJP leader and advocate Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal Bhukhri Kalan on Saturday sought clarity from the Punjab government over its much-publicised ₹10 lakh health insurance scheme.

Grewal said healthcare is not just a political promise but a commitment to protect human life with dignity and honesty. He noted that the scheme has been presented as a historic initiative offering cashless treatment up to ₹10 lakh per family. However, he claimed that several questions are now emerging about how the scheme is actually being implemented on the ground.

In a post on social media platform X, Grewal said patients, hospitals and healthcare providers are facing confusion about the scheme’s operational structure. He said clarity is the right of every citizen, especially during medical emergencies. He urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to provide a clear and transparent explanation so that people are not left uncertain during times of illness.

Grewal added that he has also raised the matter with Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh. He said that as per available information, the scheme reportedly covers around 2,356 ailments, each with a fixed package rate and a financial limit.

He expressed concern that if the cost of treatment goes beyond the fixed package amount, patients may have to pay the remaining amount from their own pockets. According to him, this would weaken the promise of universal and cashless healthcare made by the government.

Grewal said the key question is whether the ₹10 lakh coverage is a true annual limit per family or whether it is effectively restricted by treatment-wise financial caps. If every treatment has a ceiling, he said the government must clearly explain how the ₹10 lakh coverage will work in practice.

He also sought clarity on whether patients will have to bear extra expenses if hospital bills exceed the approved package rates. He said no family already struggling with illness should face additional financial burden due to unclear policy details.
