National BJP leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce a special relief package for Punjab to deal with the widespread devastation caused by heavy rains and floods across the state.
Grewal said that Punjab, considered the backbone of India’s food security, has been badly hit by relentless downpours. “Thousands of acres of crops in Majha, Doaba and Malwa regions now lie submerged, families have been displaced, precious lives lost and livelihoods completely shattered,” he said.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Grewal urged the Central government to deploy assessment teams in Punjab and extend immediate compensation to the families of the deceased and affected farmers. He also sought a long-term flood management plan to protect the state from recurring floods.
