Nal Sarovar, Thol Lake, and Nada Bet, each home to over 50,000 local and migratory birds, stand as Gujarat's premier wetlands, attracting birdwatchers from across the globe.

Gujarat Forest and Environment Department on Monday reported that the state has cemented its position as a birding paradise across the station, housing between 1.8 and 2 million birds.

The Bird Diversity Report of 2023-24, released today, highlights that Devbhumi Dwarka leads in bird variety with 456 species.

The report, based on data collected via the ‘eBird’ app, provides a snapshot of Gujarat’s bird population and species diversity across different districts.

Kutch boasts the highest population, with over 4.56 lakh birds from 161 species.

However, Devbhumi Dwarka stands out for hosting the largest variety of bird species.

State Forest and Environment Minister, Mulubhai Bera, said: “Gujarat has emerged as a heaven for birds in the country, with a population of nearly 18 to 20 lakh.”

The report highlights wetlands as significant hotspots for both local and migratory species.

Nal Sarovar, Thol Lake, and Nada Bet are among the most prominent, each supporting more than 50,000 birds.

Nal Sarovar, a Ramsar site located near Ahmedabad, is home to 3.62 lakh birds, the report notes.

Other key areas include Jamnagar, with 4.11 lakh birds across 221 species, and Ahmedabad, which supports 3.65 lakh birds from 256 species.

In contrast, districts such as Narmada, Anand, Botad, and Surat reported significantly lower numbers, with fewer than 2,000 birds each.

The study also recorded sightings of 300 bird species, including 13 near-threatened, four vulnerable, seven endangered, and one critically endangered species.

Among the state’s major wetlands, the Indo-Pak border area in Kutch was found to support 90,225 birds, while over 60,000 birds thrive in the Chhari-Dhandh wetlands in Kutch and Mokarsagar in Porbandar.
