A cashier was killed after three unknown gunmen opened fire at a medical store in Chandigarh's Sector 11 near PGI on Saturday afternoon.
The attack took place around 2.30 pm. According to witnesses, the assailants arrived on a scooter and targeted Kumar Medical Store. They fired several rounds before escaping from the spot. People present in the market said the attackers were armed with automatic weapons and started shooting moments after reaching the shop. The incident unfolded within seconds, leaving panic in the area.
Sources said the cashier suffered multiple gunshot injuries and was rushed to PGIMER, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Two other persons are also reported to have been injured in the firing.
Soon after the incident, Chandigarh Police sealed off the market area and began an investigation. CCTV footage from nearby shops and statements of eyewitnesses are being examined to identify the attackers.
Police sources said the owner of Kumar Medical Store had allegedly received threats from the Goldy Brar gang in the past and was provided security cover. However, officials have not confirmed any link between the gang and Saturday's attack.
Investigators are also probing whether the shooting was connected to an extortion demand or any organised criminal activity.
Sources further said the owners had earlier received extortion threats allegedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Police are examining that angle as part of the ongoing investigation.
