Unidentified gunmen shot jailed gangster Chandan Mishra inside a Patna hospital where he was on parole. Police suspect a rival gang and have launched a probe.

Policemen deployed outside Paras Hospital in Patna where gangster Chandan Mishra was shot by suspected rivals while on parole.

A jailed gangster on parole for medical treatment was shot by unidentified assailants at a private hospital in Patna on Thursday morning, exposing a serious lapse in security around undertrial criminals.

Chandan Mishra, a resident of Buxar district and a known criminal with several murder charges, was admitted to Paras Hospital in the city when the attackers stormed in and opened fire. He is currently under treatment.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikay Sharma said, “A criminal named Chandan Mishra, resident of Buxar district, against whom dozens of cases of murder are registered. He was transferred from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail. Chandan was on parole and admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment. The rival gang shot him. He is undergoing treatment, and with the help of the Buxar police, we are identifying the members of the rival gang, Chandan Sheru gang.”

“A criminal named Chandan Mishra, resident of Buxar district, was admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment, and members of a rival gang shot him,” said Central Range Inspector General Jitendra Rana. “He was shot multiple times and is undergoing treatment. The assailants are being identified with the help of the Buxar Police,” he added. “It cannot be ruled out that the police security guards assigned to him were involved in the incident. We will investigate this angle as well.”

Police believe that the attack was the result of a long-standing rivalry between Mishra and members of the so-called ‘Chandan Sheru gang’. Sharma added that efforts to identify the shooters have made progress as authorities possess photographs of the suspects.

Mishra had been shifted from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail earlier this year. His temporary release was granted on medical grounds. The police did not confirm whether any security was posted inside or outside the hospital at the time of the incident.

The attack took place in the morning, but hospital officials and police remained tight-lipped about the exact time of the shooting.

Investigators are scanning CCTV footage from the hospital and nearby locations to track the suspects. “Further investigation is underway,” Sharma added.
