Industrialist Rajinder Gupta filed his nomination papers on Friday as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab AAP president Aman Arora, Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora and MP Meet Hayer, Gupta arrived in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha to file his nomination.
The Rajya Sabha seat had fallen vacant after former Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora won the Ludhiana Assembly seat. The by-election is scheduled for October 24.
Gupta is the founder chairman of Trident Limited, the flagship company of the Trident Group. A Padma Shri awardee, Gupta has been instrumental in shaping Punjab’s industrial landscape.
He recently resigned as vice-chairman of the Punjab Economic Policy and Planning Board and as chairperson of the Kali Devi Temple Advisory Committee. Gupta has also served as chairman of the Board of Governors at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, and has actively contributed to the management of several IT institutions across the country.
Gupta has maintained a low profile, earning respect across party lines. Over the years, he has worked alongside stalwarts like the late Comrade Harkrishan Singh Surjit, former general secretary of the CPM, and economist Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
