Punjab Police on Saturday arrested a Gurdaspur SDM in connection with the alleged embezzlement of Rs 1.63 crore linked to land acquisition for the Jammu-Kashmir-Rajasthan highway highway project carried out in 2018–19.
The arrested officer, Anupreet Kaur of the 2012 Punjab Civil Services batch, was picked up from her official residence in Gurdaspur, where she was posted as SDM and was also overseeing the municipal council.
Confirming the development, Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police Surendra Lamba said the officer was taken into custody on Saturday. The alleged embezzlement surfaced during Kaur’s posting as SDM, Patti, in Tarn Taran in 2018. She was booked for reportedly facilitating the transfer of Rs 1.63 crore as land compensation to five ineligible persons under the National Highway-54 project connecting Jammu and Rajasthan.
Following the allegations, she had been placed under suspension for a period of time. The embezzlement case was registered in 2019 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations revealed that compensation money was transferred to the bank accounts of five individuals whose land had not been acquired for the highway project.
Police officials said another case is also pending against the SDM, in which she was booked in 2021 on allegations of embezzling Rs 88 lakh.
