Junior doctors and students of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) staged a protest on Wednesday in Guwahati, expressing solidarity with the ongoing nationwide protests following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The tragic incident, which has sparked outrage across the country, saw the medical fraternity rallying in support of the victim.
The protest at GMCH was led by the Gauhati Medical College Junior Doctor Association president, Dr. Kumarjyoti Deka.
“This is a solidarity protest. Protests have been ongoing in West Bengal for the past few days and have spread across India. We stand in support of our colleague who was assaulted and brutally murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College,” Dr. Deka stated.
In addition to expressing grief and outrage, the protesters called for swift and stringent action against the perpetrators. Dr. Deka urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to expedite the investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“We request the West Bengal government and the CBI to promptly apprehend the accused and ensure they are punished according to the law,” Dr. Deka added.
The call for justice resonated as a team of senior CBI officers arrived in Kolkata to investigate the case.
Following the Calcutta High Court's directive, the central agency took over the probe, with officials set to visit the scene where the trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9.
