Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and Indian MPs meet Guyana’s Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo in Georgetown on Sunday as Guyana backs India’s anti-terror stand and explores future bilateral cooperation.

Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and Prime Minister Mark Phillips have conveyed their country’s steadfast support for India’s fight against terrorism during meetings with an Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

The all-party delegation, which arrived in Georgetown on Sunday, called on senior Guyanese leaders to apprise them of India’s concerns following the Pahalgam attack, the ongoing Operation Sindoor, and the status of the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to the Indian High Commission in Georgetown, the delegation “called on Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, Vice President of Guyana. The delegation elaborated on India‘s position on Pahalgam, #OperationSindoor and the Indus Water Treaty, underlining India‘s resolute policy of #ZeroToleranceForTerrorism”.

“Hon‘ble VP reiterated Guyana‘s unwavering support to India‘s fight against terrorism,” it added.

Following the meeting with the Indian delegation, Guyana’s Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said, “It was an excellent visit. I assured the delegation that Guyana stands unequivocally with India. We are against terrorism and we believe that all those who perpetrate terrorist activities must be brought to justice.”

Tharoor also took to social media following the meeting, posting on X, “In addition to his expression of strong sympathy and understanding for India’s concerns in the wake of recent events, our conversation also spanned a range of topics relating to Guyana’s record-breaking 30% annual economic growth and development plans following the discovery of oil and gas.”

He further stated, “A large number of opportunities for Indian companies were mentioned, in sectors ranging from agriculture to Telecoms, banking and highway development. Guyana is also experiencing labour shortages and would welcome Indian labour as well.”

The Indian delegation also met Prime Minister Mark Phillips during a formal interaction in Berbice, held on the eve of Guyana’s 59th Independence Day celebrations.

“The discussion covered a wide range of issues pertaining to India-Guyana cooperation. The Indian delegation briefed Hon‘ble PM regarding #OperationSindoor and India‘s #ZeroToleranceForTerrorism. Hon‘ble PM reiterated Guyana‘s support and understanding for India‘s measures towards combating cross-border terrorism,” the Indian mission stated.

India has been seeking broader international support following the deadly attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam in April, which killed 27 Indian citizens and one Nepalese national. In response, Indian forces launched Operation Sindoor to target terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied territories. India has maintained that its policy of zero tolerance towards cross-border terrorism remains firm and non-negotiable.

Guyana’s assurance adds to a growing list of countries backing New Delhi’s position, especially in the wake of renewed global focus on terror financing and state-sponsored militancy.
