The DNA of a gym trainer matched the sample gathered in the rape case of a Chandigarh woman, reveals Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) report. A supplementary challan was submitted by the Chandigarh Police in the court against the 28-year-old rape accused, Sawan Bhatti.
The supplementary charge sheet revealed that DNA samples taken from the victim’s clothing and body parts matched the accused’s profile.
Police arrested Bhatti on July 1, 2024, after a case was registered against him at Sector 17 police station under sections 376, 354, 354-A, and 506 of the IPC on May 19, 2024.
The complainant informed the police that she was sitting, and talking to a friend on call in Sector 16 park when the accused approached her, grabbing her from behind.

He further threatened to kill the woman, took her to a cloistered place in the park, raped her, and then fled.
Following the complaint, the police arrested the accused after nearly two months with the help of CCTV footage showing the scooter used by the suspect.
A fast-track special court in Chandigarh, dealing with rape and POCSO cases, has already framed charges against the accused.
