A sense of pride and celebration spread across Bamsan in Himachal Pradesh after Air Commodore Bhupendra Singh Kanwar, a senior Indian Air Force officer from Doh village, was promoted to the rank of Air Vice Marshal. He has become the first officer from Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra in Hamirpur district to reach this prestigious rank.
On April 13 this year, after completing 34 years of distinguished service, Kanwar took charge as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Personnel and Civilians). Villagers said his achievement has brought immense pride to Hamirpur and the entire state of Himachal Pradesh. Residents celebrated the occasion, saying his dedication, discipline and commitment to duty have brought honour not only to his family but also to the state.
Born in Doh village, Kanwar studied at Sainik School Sujanpur Tihra as a 1981-batch cadet before joining the National Defence Academy in 1987. He was commissioned into the Flying Navigation Branch of the Indian Air Force in December 1991 and went on to log more than 4,000 flying hours on aircraft, including the HS-748 Avro, AN-32 and IL-76.
Throughout his career, he held several key positions. He served as a Qualified Navigation Instructor, became the youngest examiner at the Aircrew Examining Board, and later worked as Chief Navigation Instructor.
Kanwar also commanded an operational Air Defence Base in the South-Western Sector and served as Deputy Director General of the NCC for Karnataka and Goa, where he supervised nearly 95,000 cadets.
During his tenure at the Air Force Records Office, he played an important role in strengthening human resource management for airmen and non-combatant personnel. He also completed two tenures as Directing Staff, where he trained middle-level leadership officers from all three armed services.
His leadership and professional excellence earned him several honours, including the Vishisht Seva Medal for developing a modern web-based training system and establishing advanced training infrastructure at the Navigation Training School.
Kanwar has also received the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) Commendation and the Chief of Air Staff Commendation for his distinguished service.
An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, he holds academic degrees in Defence and Strategic Studies, Public Administration and Management.
