Harbhajan Singh raised serious concerns in the Rajya Sabha about children being increasingly exposed to obscene and pornographic content on social media platforms. The former Indian cricketer and Member of Parliament on Thursday warned that such material is becoming easily accessible to young users online.
Speaking during a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, Singh emphasised the need for responsible use of digital platforms and stronger safeguards to protect children. He said social media has become a vital communication tool, but it is also being misused to circulate inappropriate and explicit material.
Singh particularly referred to platforms such as Instagram, saying that some users share content that resembles soft pornography. He pointed out that such posts are easily accessible and can be viewed by children without much restriction.
Singh added that explicit material can now be accessed online with just a single click. He warned that children as young as 12 or 13 years old can view such content even though they may not fully understand its impact or consequences.
“Exposing children to such material at a young age is harming our future,” he said. Singh stressed that the easy availability of pornography on the internet has become a serious social concern that needs immediate attention.
He also warned that repeated exposure to such content can distort how young people perceive women. He said it could encourage the objectification of women and negatively shape children’s attitudes and behaviour as they grow older.
Calling for urgent action, Singh urged the government to bring in stricter rules and stronger digital safeguards. He also sought tougher laws to ban pornographic websites and regulate online platforms more effectively. According to him, such content offers no benefit to society and instead contributes to moral and social decline.
