An engineer allegedly took his own life by locking himself in a smoke-filled room after suffering heavy losses in the stock market, police said on Thursday.
A suicide note was found in the room where Love Kumar wrote that he was ending his life due to financial troubles and a property dispute, police said.
Senior Sub-Inspector Satyendra Bhandari, posted at Kankhal police station, said the incident took place on Wednesday in the Arihant Vihar area.
Love Kumar, a chemical engineer by profession, created smoke by burning coal on a heater in his room and locked himself inside, which led to his death by suffocation.
Before taking this step, Kumar had sent a message to his wife on WhatsApp, saying he would end his life by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Police said Kumar was deeply upset over his stock market losses and had started drinking heavily. Disturbed by his behaviour, his wife had moved to her parents’ home with their children.
After receiving Kumar’s message on WhatsApp, his wife tried calling him several times. When he didn’t respond, his family members rushed to the house.
When police arrived and broke open the door, the room was filled with smoke and Kumar was lying unconscious. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said further investigation into the case is underway.
