Former Minister and senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader T Harish Rao has demanded that the State government implement immediate measures to ensure an 85 per cent reservation for Telangana students in the B-category (management quota) seats for postgraduate medical admissions. He accused the current administration of "gross negligence" for failing to provide local reservation, thereby risking the future of Telangana’s medical students.
In an open letter addressed to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Harish Rao called for the cancellation of the existing PG admission notification. He asked for the issuance of a fresh Government Order (GO) to safeguard the interests of local students. He pointed out that hundreds of Telangana students are losing valuable PG medical seats to candidates from other states due to the absence of a local quota in management seats. Out of the 1,801 total PG medical seats available in Telangana, approximately 450 fall under the management quota, which currently lacks any local reservation, allowing outside students to claim them.
Rao highlighted that neighbouring Andhra Pradesh already provides an 85 pc local reservation in such seats, a policy the Congress government has failed to adopt in Telangana. He calculated that if a similar policy were implemented, "at least 382 additional PG seats would go to local students."
The BRS leader reminded the government that under former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the State had successfully launched medical colleges in every district and reserved 85 pc of B-category seats for locals, a move that was equivalent to opening 20 new colleges annually. "It’s a shame that Telangana’s own students are being denied opportunities in their native State, which even Andhra Pradesh guarantees," he wrote, urging the Chief Minister to act before irreparable damage was done to students.
