Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a high-level National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the August 13, 2026 assassination attempt on her husband, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded. In her letter, she stated that a plot to assassinate the former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab left him critically injured, noting that the outcome could have proved fatal had an alert security officer not risked his life to intervene. The officer was also injured while preventing the assailant from carrying out the attack.
Expressing deep personal pain and broader concern over the normalisation of violence by those in authority, Harsimrat Kaur Badal raised serious doubts regarding the independence of the ongoing state-level investigation. Although an FIR has been registered and local police report that inquiries are under way to trace potential co-conspirators, she highlighted alleged lapses and questioned the surprisingly cordial relations between senior Punjab Police officers and the primary suspect, Narain Singh Chaura, despite reported intelligence on his extremist background.
The letter further criticised the Punjab government's public response, accusing senior figures of attempting to justify the violence rather than offering swift, unequivocal condemnation. Citing previous security shortcomings, including the conduct of senior police leadership following an earlier incident in December, she urged the Home Ministry to transfer the case to the NIA to ensure a fair, thorough, and uncompromised investigation.
