The Haryana government has instructed authorities to take strict action against 370 'patwaris' (revenue officials) and 170 private individuals assisting them in corrupt activities.
The Financial Commissioner Revenue (FCR) has sent a notice to deputy commissioners across the state to start the process. Patwaris are responsible for maintaining land records, certifying land ownership, handling land mutations, and other related tasks.
Kaithal tops the list of districts with the most corrupt patwaris, with 46 individuals identified, followed by Sonipat with 41, Mahendragarh with 36, and Gurugram with 27.
Other districts like Fatehabad, Kurukshetra, and Jhajjar also have significant numbers of corrupt patwaris. The list includes patwaris from various districts, with Panchkula being the only district not affected.

The FCR has directed the deputy commissioners to take action within 15 days and submit a report. According to the report, people seeking land-related services are often harassed by patwaris, who raise unnecessary objections and demand bribes.
In Bhiwani, patwaris charge Rs 3,000-4,000 for mutations, and in Charkhi Dadri, they ask for Rs 1,000-2,000.
The report also highlights the methods used by corrupt patwaris and notes their caste and posting details. One example is a patwari in Ambala, who has been demanding bribes for various land-related services and even has a private individual collecting the money on his behalf.
This corruption harms the reputation of the Haryana government.
