Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the formation of the Women’s Empowerment Committee in the Haryana Assembly will prove to be a major milestone for strengthening the role of women in the state.
He appreciated the consistent and meaningful efforts being made by the Haryana Vidhan Sabha to promote women’s empowerment and ensure greater participation of women in governance.
Praising Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker Harvindra Kalyan, the Chief Minister said his fair, balanced and effective functioning as Speaker has helped maintain the dignity and decorum of the House.
He also acknowledged Kalyan’s experience and commitment, expressing confidence that under his leadership the proceedings of the Vidhan Sabha will continue to function smoothly and efficiently.
Speaking in the House, the Chief Minister said that empowering women will play a key role in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Developed India 2047’. He said the Haryana Vidhan Sabha has been making continuous efforts in this direction. During a one-day special session held on April 27, the Assembly unanimously approved a proposal to constitute a nine-member Women’s Empowerment Committee, with a provision ensuring at least five women members. The committee will review policies, examine reports and evaluate measures related to women’s equality and participation for one year.
He further said that the committee will work towards improving women’s representation across different sectors and addressing issues affecting them. The initiative aims to strengthen women’s role in governance and promote wider efforts toward women-led development.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, amid the Congress boycott of the special session called by the Haryana government to pass a resolution linked to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda described the proceedings as an exercise in “false propaganda”.
Commenting on the issue, Hooda said the Assembly should be used to address public concerns rather than for political messaging. “The Assembly is meant for public interest and not for spreading false propaganda,” he added.
Hooda also referred to the long history of the women’s reservation bill and questioned the timing and intent behind the government’s move. He said the bill was first introduced when he was a Member of Parliament in 1996 but was not passed at that time. He added that the bill was finally passed unanimously in 2023 and notified on April 16, raising questions about why the BJP had not acted earlier.
He further alleged that the government delayed implementing the bill and questioned its commitment to genuine women’s empowerment.
