On the last day of the Haryana Legislative Assembly’s winter session on Monday, BJP MLA from Kalka, Shakti Rani Sharma, moved a Privilege Motion in the House. While the motion was approved, it led to a walkout by Congress legislators.
Sharma said the motion was brought against Congress MLA Indu (Hindu) Raj Narwal. She explained that on December 19, a member of the House had raised questions related to her family, prompting her to move the Privilege Motion in response.
A total of 15 MLAs, most of them from the ruling BJP, stood in support of the motion. After this show of support, Assembly Speaker Harvinder Kalyan approved the Privilege Motion.
Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda opposed the motion, while INLD MLA Arjun Chautala also stood up and supported the opposition’s stand. Meanwhile, former minister Vinod Sharma was present in the visitors’ gallery during the proceedings.
Protesting against the approval of the motion, Congress MLAs staged a walkout from the House, clearly expressing their dissatisfaction and objection. The Privilege Motion, which was accepted by consensus, will now be referred to the Privileges Committee.
Earlier on Saturday, the Congress party’s no-confidence motion against the BJP-led Haryana government was defeated in the Assembly. Congress MLAs had walked out at that time as well, citing issues such as poor law and order, farmers’ demands for a legal MSP, and the deteriorating condition of roads.
The defeat of the motion and the walkout triggered sharp political debate between the ruling BJP and the opposition. Haryana ministers Krishan Kumar Bedi and Arvind Sharma criticised the Congress, calling its actions “petty tactics” and accusing the party of wasting the Assembly’s time.
Talking to mediapersons, Minister Krishan Kumar Bedi mocked the Congress walkout, saying the party often resorts to such tactics and lacks seriousness on key issues. He claimed these actions harm the interests of the state and disrupt the functioning of the Assembly.
Responding to the criticism, Congress MLA Geeta Bhukkal said the party had moved the no-confidence motion on serious public issues and expected clear answers from the government. She alleged that law and order had worsened under the BJP government, roads were in poor condition, and farmers continued to struggle for MSP.
