A Haryana police officer who was probing an extortion case involving the staff of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar has allegedly died by suicide in Rohtak. ASI Sandeep Kumar Lathar allegedly shot himself at a farmhouse in Ladhaut village, officials said.

Police recovered a pistol and a suicide note from the spot. Sandeep Kumar, who was posted with the Cyber Cell, had earlier nabbed Sushil Kumar, a staff member of IPS officer Puran Kumar, in an extortion case.

The incident took place just days after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) visited Rohtak on October 11 to investigate the case related to Puran Kumar’s staff.

Sources said Sandeep Kumar’s body was recovered from a room at his farmhouse in Ladhaut village. Police reached the location soon after receiving the information and started their probe.

Sandeep Kumar was leading the investigation into allegations that Sushil Kumar had been collecting “monthly payments” from a liquor businessman. Earlier, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, wife of the late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, had claimed that her husband was being falsely implicated in a corruption case in Rohtak.

“She had alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to trap her husband in a false case,” said a source.

Before his death, Sandeep Kumar allegedly left a suicide note and a six-minute video in which he made several serious claims concerning the ongoing investigation.

Allegations against IPS officer

In his note, ASI Sandeep Kumar accused IPS officer Y Puran Kumar of being a “corrupt cop.” He claimed that the officer took his own life because he feared his corruption would soon be exposed. Sandeep also alleged that the IPS officer tried to divert attention from his actions by portraying the matter as caste discrimination.

Sandeep Kumar was reportedly the officer who caught the IPS officer’s gunman taking a bribe of ₹2.5 lakh from a local liquor contractor. The contractor had approached the IPS officer for help after receiving threats from a gangster. Once the bribery allegations came to light, the IPS officer allegedly attempted to frame the case as a caste issue before his death.

Sandeep’s note also hinted that the officer’s transfer was linked to surfacing of these corruption allegations.

ASI’s video alleges corruption

Before his death, ASI Sandeep recorded a video message describing what he called deep-rooted corruption. He alleged that after YS Puran Kumar was posted in the Rohtak range, he started replacing honest police officers with those willing to cooperate in corrupt practices.

“These people blocked files, called petitioners and mentally tortured them by asking for money,” Sandeep claimed in the video. He also made a serious allegation that some women police personnel were sexually exploited in exchange for transfers.

Sandeep said the IPS officer’s corruption ran deep. “Roots of his corruption run very deep. He has committed suicide fearing the complaint against him,” he alleged.

Probe sought into assets of late IPS officer, wife

In his final note, ASI Sandeep Kumar also mentioned the late IPS officer’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, claiming she too feared that her “corruption may be exposed.”

He urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the couple’s assets, insisting, “This is not a caste issue. Truth must come out. He was corrupt.”

In his final words, Sandeep said he was giving up his life for the truth. “I am proud that I stand with honesty. This is important to awaken the country." He added that his family had a history of fighting for India’s independence.

He also expressed respect for Rohtak police chief Narendra Bijarnia, who was transferred shortly after being named in the IPS officer’s own suicide note.

He also praised Rohtak police chief Narendra Bijarnia, who was transferred soon after being named by the IPS officer in his own suicide note.
